Embracing the 'Just Do It' Principle: Taking the First Step to Build Website 3.0

19 Aug 20254 min read

Five years ago, during the lockdown, I decided it was time to put my Computer Games development degree to use. Finding a job was tough (it has somehow got even harder) and after countless rejections, I realised a pivot to IT might be the right move. I made two important decisions. First, I spent £1500 building a PC (for reasons other than just playing video games!). Second, I challenged myself to learn how to build a website from scratch. No website builders. I wanted to push my skills further.

The learning process was both enjoyable and intense. I relied heavily on YouTube and freecodecamp.com, especially since I was technically unemployed and had already spent all my money on that PC. I built a few small example sites and, for my big project, decided to throw privacy out the window and create a website all about me. I learned a lot during the building process and I’m especially proud of the ‘Projects’ page.

The Problem with Waiting Until Tomorrow

Two years ago, I came up with a brilliant idea for updating my website. I wanted to make the most of libraries and frameworks, aiming to expand my technical knowledge. But the plan never moved past the thinking stage. There was always an excuse not to start: “I need the perfect idea,” “There’s so much to figure out,” and my personal favourite, “I’ll start it tomorrow.” The problem with waiting until tomorrow? Tomorrow comes and goes, but nothing changes. That cycle continued until about two weeks ago. On Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 5:55 PM GMT+1, I made my first GitHub commit, and ‘new-personal-website’ was born.

Once I started, I was locked in. I became obsessed with refining and adding features nearly every day. With the powerful assistance of AI tools, the process of building my website transformed into a true learning adventure. Each prompt and experiment opened new doors, sometimes leading to unintended late-night sessions, think 2am prompting marathons. While I certainly felt the weight of those early mornings when work beckoned, I gained invaluable skills and insights along the way, making the journey as rewarding as the destination.

Do or do not. There is no try.
Yoda

So why now? I finally flipped the finger to procrastination and decided to “Just Do It.” Procrastination is an unproductive approach to life, and it is important for me to make a clear decision to act or not. As Yoda famously stated, "Do or do not. There is no try."

On a related note, one of the most impactful books I have read is The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k by Mark Manson. While this work may not resonate with everyone, it provided valuable insight into the importance of not being overly concerned with external opinions. It emphasizes that caring about every issue is neither practical nor productive. Instead, it advocates for prioritizing what truly matters—such as relationships, health, personal interests, and values. By focusing your attention on these fundamental areas, other aspects tend to align more effectively.

One Small Step

Thank you for stopping by my revamped website; I appreciate your support. This is the start of something new with the intention of sharing more personal experiences; maybe it will encourage someone to also take the leap and do something they have been meaning to do.

To sum up, the "Just Do It" mindset highlights the significance of getting started, no matter how big or small the first step may be. Embracing this philosophy can help people beat procrastination, stay on track, and reach their goals. Every achievement begins with action, not with waiting for the perfect time—which almost never comes. So why not take that first step now?
