Building Faidslounge: A Journey from Trust to Technology

11 Jan 20264 min read

There's something special about finding someone you can trust completely with your hair. For me, that person has been someone I consider a sister, a talented stylist who's been doing my hair for years with such skill that I simply can't imagine letting anyone else touch it.

What impressed me most wasn't just her ability to transform hair, but her self-sufficiency. She could do her own hair with minimal outside help, sometimes none at all. This same skill had been touching the lives of others for years, yet despite numerous conversations about turning it into a proper business, she remained hesitant.

Until a few months ago. That's when everything changed, she was ready.

As someone with knowledge of website creation and hosting, I wanted to build something special for her. But as we researched existing hair business websites, I was disappointed. Many looked untrustworthy, almost amateur. Worse still, I wouldn't feel comfortable entering my card details on most of them. If I felt that way, how many potential clients were being turned away?

Dare to be different

The prevalent solution for hair businesses was website builders costing around £12 per month, roughly the price of a Netflix subscription. While this might seem reasonable, I knew something crucial: with a little more work and know-how, that cost could drop to £0.

This became my mission: create something with virtually no upfront cost that could scale naturally with the business. Why pay now when there's more to be gained using services that offer:

  • Greater control
  • Better value for money
  • Free tiers perfectly suited for a growing business

The Technical Approach

The beauty of this setup is flexibility. I could cherry-pick services based on:

  • What best serves the project's needs
  • What offers the best value for money
  • What provides free tiers that work perfectly compared to popular paid alternatives

Yes, it takes more work and trial-and-error than drag-and-drop builders. But the advent of AI-assisted coding (what some call "Vibe Coding") has made this dramatically easier. Having prerequisite knowledge to troubleshoot when things break has been invaluable, but modern tools have lowered the barrier significantly.

The best things in life are free.

The result? Faidslounge, a professional, trustworthy platform built on:

Faidslounge homepage
Clean, professional homepage design that builds trust
1 / 7
  • Modern web technologies (React)
  • Netlify for hosting and forms (free tier)
  • Cal.com for seamless booking management (free tier)
  • Custom domain
  • Full control over every aspect of the site

Total monthly cost: £0 (aside from the domain registration)

What's Next

The next phase is integrating a CMS (Content Management System). This will allow updates to services and content without requiring my intervention, giving true ownership and independence. Beyond that, we're also planning to add images to the website. High-quality portfolio shots that showcase the transformative work and build even more confidence with potential clients and integrate a payment system when the cost makes sense.

Lessons Learned

  1. Trust matters: Both in hair and in web design, people need to feel confident
  2. Cost-effective doesn't mean cheap: Free tools can deliver premium results
  3. Flexibility is power: Choosing the right service for each need can beat one-size-fits-all solutions
  4. Modern tools democratize development: AI assistance makes complex projects accessible
  5. Start lean, scale naturally: No need to pay for capacity you don't yet need

Final Thoughts

This project is more than a website, it's about empowering someone who's been perfecting their craft for years to finally share it with the world. It's about proving that professional doesn't have to mean expensive, and that with the right approach, anyone can have the digital presence their skills deserve.

The best part? Watching her confidence grow as she sees her business come to life online, knowing it's built on a foundation that can grow with her dreams.
